Padma Mayurasana (Lotus Peacock in Sanskrit)
This asana represents the peacock, the king of birds in India. After balancing the body weight on the hands, the legs are folded in the lotus position. It strengthens the abdominal, forearms, wrists and elbows.
This asana requires great power and balance. Supposedly it can cure kidney problems and improve the digestive system. It is also beneficial for people suffering from diabetes. The elbows apply great pressure on internal organs (stomach, spleen, kidneys) and should be positioned very precisely. This asana should only be practiced under the supervision of a good yogi master. Pressure in the wrong place could damage the kidneys or other internal organs.
As peacocks can digest anything, including the powerful venom of the cobras upon which they feeds, Yogis practicing this asana can increase their digestion and eliminate toxins from their bodies.
